The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has said it would on February 4 hold a nationwide rally to voice its opposition to the proposed 50 per cent hike in telecoms tariff.
The congress stated this in a communique signed by NLC President, Joe Ajaero, and issued at the end of an emergency meeting of the union’s National Administrative Council (NAC) on Wednesday.
According to the communique, the NAC-in-session rejected the 50 per cent telecom tariff hike, describing it as “too harsh for citizens”.
It also said the Nigeria Communications Commission’s decision to increase telecom tariff by 50 per cent was a “direct assault on Nigerian workers” and the entire populace who are already battling inflation, hike in price of petrol, food inflation and hike in electricity tariff among others.
“To express our collective opposition to this arbitrary tariff hike, the NLC will embark on a nationwide mass rally on Tuesday, February 4, 2025,” the communique read.
The NAC-in-session demanded immediate suspension of the hike and called on the Federal Government, NCC and National Assembly to engage with stakeholders to review the proposed tariff adjustment within the context of the economic realities facing Nigerians.
The NLC said if the government fails to heed to this, it would mobilise for a “nationwide boycott of telecommunications services and further mass actions which may involve nationwide withdrawal of our service to resist policies that exacerbate poverty and inequality.”
