Labour suspends strike action for one week

Must read

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), on Tuesday, relaxed their industrial action after a 24-hour shutdown of the economy.

The suspension of the strike was announced today in Abuja by the TUC President, Festus Osifo after a joint extraordinary national executive council meeting of the unions. He said a communique will be issued shortly.

The Unions said the suspension will last for one week.

Both unions downed tools on Monday to register their grievances over the hike in electricity tariff and lack of consensus on a new minimum wage.

The development paralyzed activities in critical sectors of the economy with schools, businesses, hospitals, and airports shut. The national grid was also shut down, throwing the nation into darkness.

“The joint NEC meeting of TUC/NLC only agreed to to relax the industrial action for one week with immediate effect. The strike was not suspended. We are giving the government the benefit of the doubt,” a member of the NLC executive told our reporter.
